How Do I Fix My Website? Start Here.

By Jenaro DiazFounder & CEO, SWATSAustin, TX6 min read

The short answer: email hello@swats.ai.

The longer answer is below. Business owners ask us the same questions every week, and they ask ChatGPT and Google the same ones too. So here are straight answers. But every website is different, and every business is different. The honest first step is always the same: understanding your case. That is where a person helps more than a search result.

Why “it depends” is the real answer

A website problem is rarely just one thing. A slow site might be the hosting, the images, a plugin or all three. A broken page might be a plugin update, an expired account or a server change you never heard about. Two sites with the same symptom can need completely different fixes.

That is why we start every conversation the same way: tell us what is wrong, in your own words. You don't need to know the technical terms. We will look at your site, ask the right questions, and tell you plainly what we see.

Common questions

These are the most common questions I have gotten over the years. I have spent more than 25 years building websites for businesses, nonprofits, artists and agencies, and the same worries keep coming back, no matter the industry or the size of the company. Here are the answers I give.

How do I fix my website?

Start by writing down what you see: what is broken, since when, and what changed recently (an update, a new plugin, a new host, a payment that didn't go through). Then email it to hello@swats.ai. We will review your site and explain your options before anything is touched.

Why is my website down?

The most common causes are an expired domain, an expired or unpaid hosting account, a failed update, or a problem at the hosting company. Check that your domain and hosting are paid first. If they are, the cause is usually inside the site itself, and that needs a closer look.

My website was hacked. What do I do?

Don't panic, and don't pay anyone who contacts you claiming they can “unlock” it. Change the passwords for your hosting, your website admin and your email. Contact your hosting company. Then have someone review the site, because a hacked site often has more than one problem hidden inside it. Email hello@swats.ai and we will help you understand what happened.

Why is my website so slow?

Usually it is a mix of oversized images, too many plugins, cheap shared hosting and outdated software. Speed matters because visitors leave slow sites, and search engines notice. The right fix depends on how your site was built.

My website says “Not secure.” Is that bad?

It means your site’s security certificate (SSL) is missing or expired, so browsers warn your visitors. It is usually simple to fix, but it is also a sign that nobody is watching your site. Every SWATS Smart Website includes SSL.

My WordPress site broke after an update. Can it be fixed?

Often, yes. Updates break sites when themes or plugins are old and no longer maintained. The fix might be a rollback, a replacement plugin or a bigger rebuild. If it keeps happening, that is a sign the platform has become the problem.

My web developer disappeared. How do I get my website back?

First find out who controls your domain, your hosting and your website login. If those accounts are in the developer's name, you will need to recover them. Email hello@swats.ai and we will help you work out what you own and how to get access.

Should I fix my website or build a new one?

It depends on how old the site is, what it runs on, and what your business needs today. Sometimes a repair is enough. Sometimes the repair costs more than a fresh start. We will tell you which one makes sense for you, honestly. Our honest comparison of website platforms can help too.

How much does it cost to fix a website?

It depends on the problem and how the site was built. At SWATS, a Smart Website starts at $500 to set up and $99.99 a month, and the monthly includes hosting, security updates, backups, monitoring and every change you email us. We will tell you what your case needs before you commit to anything.

Can I fix my website myself?

Sometimes. Small content changes, yes. But think of it like fixing a leaking toilet by following a YouTube tutorial. It might work. Or you might end up with a flooded bathroom and a plumber’s bill. Security problems, broken updates and server issues can get worse when you experiment. If your website brings in customers, it is worth having someone look before you start clicking.

Why doesn't my website show up on Google or in ChatGPT answers?

Search engines and AI assistants need clear, well-structured, up-to-date information to understand what your business does. Old, slow or broken sites are hard for them to read. Fixing the foundation usually fixes the visibility too. Every Smart Website is built to be found by search engines and AI assistants.

When should I talk to a human?

As soon as your website affects your business: lost leads, a broken contact form, a security warning, a site that is down. Search results give you general answers. A person can look at your actual site and tell you what is going on.

What happens when I email hello@swats.ai?

A person on our team reads it. We look at your website, ask any questions we need, and reply with what we see and what we recommend. No jargon, and no obligation.

How SWATS helps

SWATS builds and runs Smart Websites for businesses that would rather run their business. If your current site is broken, slow or stuck on an old platform, we can move it to a Smart Website, keeping your design and your domain, or build you a new one. After that, keeping it up to date is simple: you email the change, approve a preview, and it is live.

But it starts with your case. Every situation is different, so we want to understand yours first.

How do I fix my website? Just email hello@swats.ai.
